Why Mountain Bikers Should Consider Weight Training
Weight training is a good idea. It doesn’t apply directly to improved mountain biking, but there are many benefits for mountain bikers.
- Build Upper-Body Strength
- Build Bone Mass
- Correct Muscle Imbalances
- Prevent Injury
Build some upper body strength.
Upper body strength helps you control the bicycle.
Build bone mass.
Cycling is not a weight-bearing activity and therefore does not build much bone mass. Add resistance training to help build your bones.
Correct muscle imbalances.
Building up some muscles but not others (by doing no exercise other than cycling) can create muscle imbalances, which can lead to problems with your posture and set you up for injuries.
Stronger bones, more muscle mass, and well-rounded muscle strength will all help prevent injury.
